OUR ROADMAP to a more sustainable world.

This is our plan and we need everyones support.

ENTOLAb's TIMELINE

Insect industry milestones

2023
Scaling-up our farm and data science services

We are working hard to scale up our production to meet demand and to develop services to automate processes using machine vision, artificial intelligence and augmented reality.

2021/2022
Consultation on transitional arrangements for edible insects in Great Britain

A consultation on a proposed legislated transitional period under the novel food regulations for edible insects in England, Scotland and Wales. The proposal has been developed with input from Food Standards Scotland (FSS).

q3 2022
Growth Plan & Customers Development.

Growing by allowing entrepreneurs to start-up their own farms in minimum time. By providing all the resources and know-how need to start producing proteins.

2021/2022
Solutions Development.

By understanding the field and mechanics. We are being able to organized and design solutions for the industry and automatise key tasks using previously developed resources and know-how.

Research Stage

We are scaling-up our mealworm production to reach our maximum estimates. And learning along the way how to improve this process.

Poultry & Piglets
EU authorises using PAPs (Processed Animal Proteins) in pig and poultry feed . On the 18th of August, 2021, the EU Commission decided to amend the ban on PAP use in pig and poultry feed, meaning that insect-based ingredients can now serve the sector. The decision, based on the scientific opinion from the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA), follows the approval from the European Parliament and Council and the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCOPAFF) in April 2021.
Pet Food
Insects are a solution of choice for animal nutrition for several reasons. On the one hand, insects are naturally part of animals' diets, even pets. In fact, between 3% and 5% of a wild cat’s diet consists of insects. They provide essential nutritional benefits thanks to their high content of proteins and polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Aquaculture
Aquaculture plays a decisive role in human nutrition: more than pig, sheep, cattle, or poultry farming, aquaculture is the world’s fastest-growing animal production. Half of the fish consumed comes from aquaculture (FAO 2014), and this figure will continue to increase. Fishmeal, the primary source of food for aquaculture fish, is a premium nutritional ingredient. However, it is facing an unprecedented crisis due to decreased fish stocks. The FAO predicts a drop in supply of 3 million tonnes by 2025, due to a four-fold increase in fishmeal prices over the last 15 years. The lack of sustainable solutions for aquaculture harms prices and availability for consumers.
Human
The growing demand for high protein food for sports nutrition, dietetic food or food supplements creates further opportunities. The use of insect-derived ingredients in such specialised products is a niche, but it is forecasted to develop rapidly in the next few years. Furthermore, the development of the insect as a food market would be driven by accessibility, consumer acceptance and sociocultural evolution (Source IPIFF vision paper).
